(Red Maple Journal/Helen Yang) On March 29, 2025, Jean Yip, the former Liberal MP for Scarborough-Agincourt, officially launched her federal re-election campaign at her new office located at 11 Ivy Bush Avenue, Unit3, Scarborough, ON M1V 2W7.
Over 100 attendees joined the launch event, including former Liberal MPs Ahmed Hussen, who served as Federal Minister of International Development, and Salma Zahid; Ontario Liberal MPPs Andrea Hazell and Jonathan Tsao; Toronto City Councillors Jamaal Myers and Nick Mantas; former Ontario Liberal MPP Gerry Phillips, who served as a cabinet minister in the governments of David Peterson and Dalton McGuinty; and Tim Hodgson, Liberal MP candidate for Markham–Thornhill. The event also welcomed community leaders, group members,media representatives, supporters, and volunteers.
Born in Scarboroughand raised in Agincourt, Jean Yip was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourtin a by-election in December 2017 and was re-elected in 2019 and 2021. Jean is astrong advocate for the diverse constituents of Scarborough-Agincourt. During the recentredistribution of electoral boundaries, she successfully fought to ensure Scarborough-Agincourt retained its identity and representation, preserving six ridings for Scarborough instead of the proposed five.
As an MP, Jean remains closely connected to her constituents throughmonthly coffee chats, the Scarborough-Agincourt youth and seniors councils, interfaith meetings, and regular roundtables with stakeholders and the business community. She also keeps residents informed through newsletters and monthly e-updates, providing valuable information onfederal funding opportunities, benefits, public consultations, and job opportunities.
Jean has worked tirelessly with government and community partners to develop the Bridletowne Neighbourhood Centre, which broke ground in June 2023 with $26.7 million in federal funding thanks to her advocacy. In2025, she successfully secured an additional $9 million for the project.
In Parliament, Jean serves as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Public Accountsand is a member of the Special Committee on Canada-China Relations. She is also the founder and Chair of the Liberal Chinese Caucusand previously served as Co-Chair of the Seniors Caucus.
She has actively participated in nearly a dozen parliamentary working groups, including the Canada-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group, Canada-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group, Canada-Italy Interparliamentary Group, Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association, Canada-Greece Parliamentary Friendship Group, Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association, and the All-Party Cancer Caucus.
In November 2024, she introduced Motion M-171, calling for December to be recognized as Canadian Christian Month.
Since her election, Jean has spoken in the House of Commonson key issues such asaffordability, community safety, youth employment, seniors’income support, long-term care, housing, small business interests, anti-Asian racism, the Hong Kong Permanent Residence Pathway, and cancer support initiatives.
Jean completed her degree at the University of Toronto before pursuing a career in insurance and underwriting, where she became a team leaderand earned the Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) designation.
Her parents immigrated to Canada, where she was raised with the values of hard work, family, and compassion—principles she now instills in her three sons, whom she raised with her late husband, Arnold Chan.
Jean is eager to continue serving the residents of Scarborough-Agincourt.
After the launch celebration, Jean Yip led volunteers in canvassing efforts and received encouragement from supporters. Many expressed their best wishes for her re-election, placing their trust in her continued leadership and experience.
As the federal election campaign unfolds, Jean Yip remains committed to advocating for the best interests of Scarborough-Agincourt and delivering meaningful change for her constituents. She welcomes support and volunteers.
